How to convert HEIC photos to JPG

Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos in HEIC format. More efficient than JPG in terms of compression, it has one major problem: it's not compatible everywhere. This guide shows you how to convert HEIC photos to JPG in seconds.

What is the HEIC format?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) has been the default image format on Apple devices since 2017. It uses the HEVC (H.265) codec and offers several advantages:

  • Smaller size. A HEIC file weighs about 50% less than a JPG of equivalent quality.
  • Better quality. At the same size, HEIC preserves more detail, especially in gradients and dark areas.
  • Advanced features. Support for transparency, image sequences (Live Photos), and HDR.

Why convert to JPG?

Despite its qualities, HEIC isn't supported everywhere:

  • Windows. Versions prior to Windows 10 (update 1803) can't read HEIC natively. You need to install a paid codec from the Microsoft Store.
  • Web browsers. Chrome and Firefox only recently added HEIC support, and it's still incomplete.
  • Social media. Some platforms silently reject HEIC files or aggressively recompress them.
  • Business applications. Accounting software, CRMs, ticket systems… most only accept JPG and PNG.

Tutorial: convert HEIC to JPG with Filzy

1

Open the conversion tool

Go to HEIC to JPG. You can also convert to PNG or WebP if you prefer a different format.

2

Drop your HEIC photos

Drag and drop your .heic or .heif files into the zone. Filzy accepts multiple files at once for batch processing. Previews are generated automatically.

3

Start the conversion

Click "Convert". HEIC decoding happens directly in your browser. Even 20 MB photos convert in seconds.

4

Download the JPGs

Get each file individually or download everything as a ZIP archive. Your original HEIC photos are not modified.

Which output format to choose?

FormatAdvantagesBest for
JPGUniversal compatibility, small sizeSharing, emails, web
PNGLossless, transparencyGraphics, screenshots
WebPBest size/quality ratioModern websites

Tip: disable HEIC on iPhone

If you want your iPhone to take photos directly in JPG:

  1. Open Settings → Camera → Formats
  2. Select Most Compatible instead of "High Efficiency"

Warning: your photos will be about twice as large. If storage is limited, it may be better to keep HEIC and convert as needed.

Your files stay private

HEIC decoding and JPG encoding happen entirely in your browser. No photo is sent to a server. Processing is local, instant, and confidential.
